The proper final release of Cupcake will probably take place with an over-the-air update by mid-May to existing G1s, if rumors are to be believed.

In the meantime, there are already some G1-ready builds of Cupcake and later code at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.ph... – but as far as I can tell the most usable ones from there (Haykuro's H builds and TheDudeOfLife's G builds) are still mildly unstable – for example, after I connected a Bluetooth stereo headset on TheDudeOfLife's G build, the phone stopped working for phone calls until I rebooted. That's partially because Haykuro's builds are based on code for the HTC Sapphire, and TheDudeOfLife's build is based on the preliminary Donut branch.
